Hurt…….Woodrow Nelson Ward, Sr., age 92 of Hurt died Thursday, December 1, 2022 at Gretna Health and Rehab.

Born August 5, 1930 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late William Tazewell Ward and Etta Hammock Ward. He was predeceased by a son, Michael E. Ward; one sister, Wilmouth Ward; six brothers, W.T. Ward, Austin Ward, Earnest Ward, Stuart Ward, Issac Ward and Addison "Scrap" Ward.

Mr. Ward was a member of Rocky Mount Christian Church and attended Summersett Baptist Church. Woodrow was a Virginia State Trooper for 38 years, serving the citizens of Franklin County, chasing and catching some bootleggers over the years. He was an Army Veteran, serving in the 560 ^th Field Artillery and the 52 ^nd Military Police company. He also was a member of the US Marshalls Service for 17 years, where he spent his time protecting Federal Judges at the Poff Building in Roanoke. Mr. Ward was a member of the Rocky Mount Masonic Lodge #201 for 46 years. Throughout his life, he dedicated his time and resources in helping out those around him in the community, including giving to numerous charities. He also enjoyed nature, animals, woodworking and loved researching his family heritage and connection to Major John Ward for which Ward's Road is named.

He is survived by his wife, Hilda Adams Worley Ward of the residence; one son, Woodrow Nelson Ward, Jr. of High Point, NC; one sister, Doris Dearing and husband, Ronnie of Forest; three grandchildren, Nelson Andrew Ward of High Point, NC, Karen Pagans and husband, Dale of Union Hall and Jennifer Locklear and husband, Dallas of Sophia, NC; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 3, 2022 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Trooper Chaplain Richard Jarrell and Randolph Coffey. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, December 2, 2022 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
