Gretna……William Henry "W.H." Witcher, Sr., age 95 of Gretna died Sunday, December 19, 2021 at his residence.

Born July 1, 1926 in Whittles, he was a son of the late Nollie Averette Witcher and Melissa Shelhorse Witcher.  He was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Louise Shelton Witcher.

Mr. Witcher was employed at Gretna Tractor an Implement Company and was co-owner of Gretna Farm and Auto.  He was well known among the farmers of Southside Virginia as he repaired many tractors, combines, hay balers, irrigation pumps, and other farm equipment.  His mechanical ability identified him as a man who could fix almost anything.  He enjoyed refinishing furniture and putting bottoms in chairs.  As a member of the Climax Ruritan Club, he was the official fryer of thousands of fried apple pies for the annual Sorghum Festival.  Mr. Witcher was a member of Greenbay Christian Church where he served as deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher, and Treasurer.

He is survived by one son, Billy Witcher and wife, Nancy of Lenoir, NC; one daughter, Gail Bosiger and husband, John of Halifax; five grandchildren, Wesley Bosiger, Scott Bosiger, Melissa Countryman and husband, Taylor, Erin Penley and husband, Todd, and Jenna Lahiff and husband, Matt; eleven great-grandchildren; one brother, Averette Witcher of Sutherlin; one sister, Jo Ann Poole and husband, Don of Ringgold; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Rowland and Nora Violet Osborne; one brother-in-law, Ned Shelton; a special uncle, Wesley Witcher and wife, Shirley of Clemson, SC; and a special caregiver, Lila Patterson.

Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at Gretna Burial Park by Pastor James Headen.
