William Marshall Spain, age 77 of Richmond died Tuesday August 24, 2021, after a lengthy illness.

Born March 29, 1944 in Richmond, he was the son of the late Judge William E. Spain and Birdie Chapman Spain. He was preceded in death by his son William James Spain.

Mr. Spain joined the Air Force Reserves at an early age, attended RPI (now VCU), and retired as a firefighter from the City of Richmond after 26 years of service. A lover of animals, he was devoted to his childhood dog, Rusty, his Great Danes, and to his present dog, Lola. Mr. Spain was a Master Gunsmith with a passion for researching and building pre-Revolutionary and Revolutionary War period black powder firearms.

Mr. Spain is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lois Finney Spain; two daughters, Sarah Spain of North Chesterfield and Jenny Spain and wife, Melinda Freckleton of Catlett; one granddaughter, Clara Freckleton-Spain; and sister, Judy Ashley and husband, Joe of Richmond.

Private graveside services were held at the Finney Family Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be planned at a future date.
