Gretna……….William Raymond Scruggs, age 97 of Gretna died Saturday, April 2, 2016 at his residence.
Born February 26, 1919 in Pittsylvania County he was a son of the late Mekean O'Brien Scruggs and Lillie Simpson Scruggs. He was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Margaret Rowland Scruggs; three brothers, Frank Scruggs, Robert Scruggs and Harris Scruggs; and two sisters, Gillie Ann Goldstein and Madeleine Terry. He was an Army Veteran of World War II and a farmer. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing, playing the fiddle and raising tobacco.
He is survived by two sons, Richard "Dickie" Scruggs and fiancée, Sharon Mayhew of Gretna and Bill Scruggs of Richmond; one sister, Deana Everidge of Waynesboro; five grandchildren, Chad Scruggs, Holly Roach, Cody Scruggs, Eric Scruggs and Dylan Scruggs; and two great-grandchildren, Evan Scruggs and Molly Scruggs.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Rev. R.G. Rowland. Burial with Military Honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232 will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2016 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
