William "Butch" Ernest Scott, 84, of Altavista, Virginia, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2026, at Lynchburg General Hospital, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly. Known for his larger-than-life personality, infectious sense of humor, and ability to make friends wherever he went, Butch leaves behind a legacy of laughter, service, and love.

Born in Lynchburg, Virginia, on December 15, 1941, Butch was the son of the late Gertrude Stinnette Scott and James Oakley Scott. He dedicated 25 years of service to the Altavista Police Department, where he built a reputation for integrity, dedication, and a genuine commitment to helping others. His passion for serving his community extended beyond his law enforcement career through his many years as a volunteer with the Altavista Life Saving Crew, answering the call whenever he was needed.

Butch's greatest joy was his family. He cherished every opportunity to spend time with them, cheer them on in their endeavors, share a laugh, and remind them how deeply they were loved. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, he took immense pride in the people he loved and the life they built together.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Diane Goad Scott; his sisters, Fay Scott Turner of Forest, Virginia, and Arlene Scott of Bedford, Virginia; his daughters, Greta Scott Selden (Stephen) of Mechanicsville, Virginia, and Megan Scott Spofford of Charlottesville, Virginia; his grandchildren, William and Landon Selden and George and Claire Spofford. He also leaves behind beloved aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

To know him was to know laughter, never meeting a stranger, he had an unforgettable sense of humor and his unwavering willingness to help others. He brightened every room he entered, lightened every conversation, and left people happier than he found them. Quick-witted, charismatic, and genuine, and so very loved, he leaves behind a lifetime of memories and stories.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 5, 2026 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Elder Raymond Goad.  Burial will follow in Weatherford Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with food and fellowship to follow the burial at Weatherford Primitive Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 5, 2026 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
