Lynch Station……Wilbur (Tiny) Gibson, age 81 of 52 Cope Lane, Lynch Station departed this earthly life on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Born June 26, 1933 in Pittsylvania County, he was the youngest son of the late James Gibson and Rosa Belle Short Gibson Worley. He was predeceased by a daughter, Katherine Elaine Gibson and five brothers, Andrew Gibson, Herbert Gibson, Acie Gibson, Noel Gibson, and Harry Gibson. Wilbur joined the United States Marine Corps and served overseas in Korea during the Korean Conflict. After his service he went to work at Burlington Industries in Altavista as a mechanic. After leaving Burlington, he opened Gibson Custom Pallets in Lynch Station in 1979 which he operated until 1996. He enjoyed restoring antique cars, music, dancing and woodworking, including crafting musical instruments.
He is survived by his wife of over 62 years, Lela Cope Gibson of the residence; three sons, Daniel L. Gibson and his wife, Debra of Hurt, H. Clinton Gibson and his wife, Regina of Long Island and David K. Gibson and his wife, Candida of Lynch Station; one brother, Charlie Gibson of Sycamore; one sister, Lottie Gibson Dalton of Moneta; a special friend, Jane Gibson; seven grandchildren 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:30 P.M. Friday, November 21, 2014 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Elder Marvin Brumfield. Burial with Military Honors by American Legion Altavista Memorial Post 36 will follow in the Gibson Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Thursday, November 20, 2014 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
