Gretna.……Vonnie Simpson Custer, age 97 of Gretna died Monday, July 22, 2024 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born November 3, 1926 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Morgan Simpson and Minerva Goad Simpson.  Mrs. Custer was predeceased by her husband, Coleman Lee Custer; a daughter, Linda June Custer; one brother, Joel Simpson; and six sisters, Edna Yeatts, Agatha Simpson, Velma Moore, Carrie Myers, Annie George and Meta Shelton.  Mrs. Custer retired from Chatham Knitting Mill.  She was an outstanding church member of Gretna Christian Church and a member of (CWF) Chrisitan Women's Fellowship.  Mrs. Custer enjoyed sewing, word puzzles, jig saw puzzles, walking, helping with Bingo at Gretna Health and Rehab, gardening and flowers.

She is survived by one son, Melvin Custer and wife, Maryann of Gretna; one daughter, Janice Custer Wood of Gretna; three grandchildren, Erik Custer, Adam Custer and wife, Jamie and Travis Wood and wife, Danielle; and five great-grandchildren, Layla Custer, Audrey Custer, Reika Custer, Tyler Wood and Finley Wood.

Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2024 at Gretna Burial Park by Lee Ashley, Minister.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law, Melvin and Maryann Custer.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Gretna Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box. 14, Gretna, VA 24557 or to Gretna Chrisitan Church, P.O. Box 644, Gretna, VA 24557.
