Gretna……Virginia Rigney Mattox, age 89 of Gretna died Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at her residence.
Born March 21, 1928 in Penhook, she was a daughter of the late Henry Birchie Rigney and Fannie Hedrick Rigney. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Lee Mattox; three grandchildren, Rachel Wood, Stephanie Wood and Michelle Wood; two brothers, Raleigh Rigney and Clyde Rigney; seven sisters, Louise Witcher, Nannie Rigney, Estelle Mattox, Mary Rowland, Helen Dodson, Alice Turnbull and Edith Cocke; and a son-in-law, Nelson Winston. Mrs. Mattox was a member of West End Church of Christ and was a home maker. She loved her cats; and she enjoyed reading, sewing, canning, gardening, washing clothes, cleaning dishes and listening to piano music.
She is survived by one son, Joseph Howard Mattox of Gretna; five daughters, Candace Wood and husband, Dale of Charlottesville, Cynthia Arthur and husband, Jim of Kenbridge, Pamela Winston of Brookneal, Ellen Adams and husband, Leroy of Gretna, and Sharon Gumbs and husband, Rick of Bumpass; four grandchildren, Andrew Wood and wife, Laura of Papillion, Nebraska, Charlotte W. Archer and husband, Scott of Louisa, Sarah M. Johnson and husband, Randall of Concord, and Emily A. Williamson and husband, Rolin of Richmond; eight great-grandchildren, Hannah Wood, Alex Wood, Emma Wood, Philip Archer, Maggie Archer, Paul Archer, Molly Johnson and Mattox Johnson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 11, 2017 at the West End Church of Christ by Randy Parker, Minister. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 10, 2017 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
