Long Island … Virginia Ann Edwards Tucker, age 83 of Straightstone, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.
Born January 23, 1933 in Mt. Airy, she was a daughter of the late Annie Lou Hankins Edwards and Percy Albert Edwards. She grew up in St. John's Episcopal Church in Mt. Airy. For 34 years, Ann was a dedicated factory worker at Piedmont / Schrader Bridgeport in Altavista. Before that Ann and her late husband, Henry A. Tucker, were tobacco farmers in the Straightstone community. She was a devoted member of Straightstone Baptist Church, where she held many roles including over 20 years as church custodian and 53 years singing in the church choir. She enjoyed sitting on her front porch watching the birds and seeing the cars go by. She enjoyed talking on the phone, sharing meals and visiting with family and friends. She was a devoted community member and was always willing to help a neighbor in need. She loved her family and had a special bond with her great-grandson.
She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Tucker Mills and her husband, Gerald Mills; two granddaughters, Angela Mills and Heather Mills McClaugherty and her husband, Brandon McClaugherty; one great-grandson, Braxton McClaugherty; all of Christiansburg. She is also survived by her sister, Jean Midkiff, and her husband, Franklin Midkiff of Huddleston; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Edwards of Mt. Airy; Margaret Tucker Davis of Gretna; Jeanette Tucker Edwards, and her husband, Latane Edwards of Hurt; four brothers-in-law, Jim Tucker of Gretna; Bill Tucker of Long Island; Buddy Tucker, and his wife, Marie Tucker of Gretna; Ruben Tucker, and his wife, Judy Tucker, of Gretna, VA; numerous nieces, nephews and many cherished friends.
She is preceded in death by her brother, Pete Edwards and an infant brother, Percy Albert Edwards, Jr.; two sisters, Briley Edwards Hedrick, and her husband, J.D. Hedrick, and Bertie Edwards Johnson, and her husband, Ed Johnson; in-laws, Brace and Elsie Tucker; brothers and sisters-in-law, Esther Davis; W.B. Tucker, Jr.; Loter Tucker Coffey, and her husband, Willie Coffey; Inez Tucker; Shirley Tucker; and Lois Tucker.
Gathering of friends and family will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, August 22, 2016 at Straightstone Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Straightstone Baptist Church by Pastor Jason Mauk, Pastor David Bell and Pastor Chris Brooks. Burial will follow in the Moon Family Cemetery.
