Pittsville…….Virgie Mae Thompson Church, age 68 of Pittsville, died Sunday, December 3, 2023 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born February 26, 1955 in Roanoke, she was a daughter of the late Mary Catherine Powers Thompson. She was predeceased by her husband, Danny Church. Mrs. Church was a member of Open Bible Baptist Church and was a home maker. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, working in her flower garden, watching Christmas movies and loved her dogs. Virgie was kind, gentle and full of light. She had the soul of a warrior which she exemplified in her 6 week and 2-day battle. Her love for her family was demonstrated daily. When such a light, as the one she shone goes out, it leaves a darkness that the family hopes to diminish with the reflection of her light in their memories and their lives.

She is survived by one son, Matt Gibson and wife, Brooke of Hurt; two daughters, Misty Lumpkin and husband, Stephen of Pittsville and Nicole Sloan and husband, Stephen of Evington; 12 grandchildren, Hannah Sloan (Evan), Starr Sloan, Nathan Sloan (Kristin), Samantha Shephard (Ben), Alyssa Boyes (Eli), Jessica Pike, Alivia Sloan, Zach Lumpkin, Matthew Gibson, Jr., Maddie Lumpkin, Reid Lumpkin, and Mary Gibson; and six great-grandchildren, Lucas, Ezekiel, Aiden, Ethan, Hazel and Braelynn.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Open Bible Baptist Church will be held at a later date.
