Vernice Lee Pickerel Atkinson

Hurt......Vernice Lee Pickerel Atkinson, age 92, of Hurt died Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at Gretna Health & Rehabilitation Center.
Born August 30, 1917 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Lee Pickerel and Sallie Dalton Pickerel. She was predeceased by her husband, Noel Garner Atkinson; three brothers, Moman Pickeral, Henry Pickerel and Acie Pickeral; five sisters, Virginia (Vig) Harmon, Nona Pickerel, Ora Floyd, Grace Pickerel and Lois Pallante. Mrs. Atkinson enjoyed her family and cooking and was always proud that she finished at the top of her class at Gretna High School.
She is survived by one son, Dwight Atkinson and wife, Beth of Woodbridge; two daughters, Peggy Yeatts and husband, David of Gretna and Linda Atkinson of Forest; five grandchildren, Virginia Atkinson, Jeremy Atkinson, Angie Yeatts, Cindy Powers and Robin Barbour; three great-grandchildren, Holly Barbour, Brittany Barbour and Brianna Powers; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 16, 2010 at the Colbert-Moran Chapel by Elder Raymond. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of her granddaughter, Angie Yeatts, 212 Prospect Road, Hurt.
