Gretna…….David Thomas (Tom) Mayhew, 84, of 10789 East Gretna Road, Gretna, died Sunday, February 13, 2011 in Gretna as the result of an automobile accident.
Born September 10, 1926 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late, David Taplid Mayhew and Reyland Arlene McCormick Mayhew. He was predeceased by a brother, John Mayhew. He owned and operated Mayhew's Grocery in Mount Airy for 41 years and was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Mayhew was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church, farmed, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Maggie Jones Mayhew of the residence; two sons, Donald Ray Mayhew of Gretna, and Randy Mayhew of Gretna; two sisters, Mabel Stepp of Williamsburg, and Hazel Richards of Newport News; three grandchildren, Jeremy Davis, Ashley Mayhew, and Amanda Parks; and one great-grandchild, Ady Davis.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at Mulberry Baptist Church by Rev. Robert Townsend, and Dr. Jerry Jordan. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
