Obituary

Theta Rowland Betterton, age 87 of Concord, NC, formerly of Hurt, VA, died, Tuesday, December 29, 2020.  She was married for 41 years to the late JW Betterton.

Born January 29, 1933 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Floyd R. and Fannie Short Rowland.  She was predeceased in death by a loving sister, Dorothy R. Wilson; a sister-in-law, Jean Rowland; and a special nephew, James M. Rowland.

She is survived by one daughter Tammy Betterton Biggs and her husband Clinnie of Concord, NC; three grandsons, USAF SSGT Nicholas Biggs, US Army PFC Michael Biggs, and Christian Biggs who were very special to her. She is also survived by a very special brother Floyd Morgan Rowland and a number of special nieces and nephews.

She was a lifetime member of Midway Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for 30 years and was a member of the choir since the age of 14.

She was a graduate of Renan High School and was employed by Klopman Mills of Hurt, where she worked in the Shipping Office and later in Retail Billing. She went from there to be a mother and homemaker.

In March 1990 she began serving as a volunteer at Autumn Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She and Lois Law organized a weekly gathering for the residents known as "Sing Along", and she enjoyed her time there greatly, continuing to serve there for fourteen years.

After moving to North Carolina, she attended Pitts Baptist Church where she made many wonderful friends. She also had a lifetime of wonderful friends and dear cousins in Virginia.

A funeral service will be conducted Friday, January 1, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Midway Baptist Church in Gretna, VA by Rev. Lynn Marstin.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

The family suggests those wishing to make memorial contributions consider the American Cancer Society, The American Heart Association, or Midway Baptist Church.
