Hurt……Samuel David Farris, Jr., "Monk", age 76 of Hurt, died Thursday, January 11, 2024 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born July 14, 1947 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Samuel David Farris, Sr., and Carrie Mae Irby Farris.  He was predeceased by one son, Jared Farris; four brothers, Kenneth Wayne Farris, Sr., Calvin Farris, Donnie Farris, and Ryland Farris; and two sisters, Mary Farris Pugh, and Betty Farris Dodds.  SP/4 Farris was a Purple Heart U.S. Army Veteran of the Central Highlands - IFFV and 4th Infantry Division Artillery, and saw heavy fighting in Dak To and the TET Offensive in Vietnam.  After returning stateside, Mr. Farris was a nuclear technician with BWXT for 37 years, retiring in 2006.  He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and an assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 175.  Monk was a devoted husband and father.  He enjoyed perfecting custom coffee blends, and observing nature from his back porch with his dog, "Dixie Sunshine".

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Frances Scruggs Farris; one son, Shaun Farris and wife, Bethany; two brothers, Ted Farris and wife, Judy, and Roy Farris; five sisters, Carolyn Hall, Lucy Smith and husband, James, Lois Wheeler and husband, Wayne, Peggy Harward and husband, Calvin, and Judy Ball; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 19, 2024 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Pastor Matthew Speck.  Interment of ashes will follow in the Farris Family Cemetery.  Military Honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Legion Post 232, P.O. Box 675, Gretna, VA 24557.
