Gretna……..Sammie Meade Short Bennett, age 87 of Gretna, died Thursday, December 7, 2017 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born June 13, 1930 in Altavista, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Edward Short and Elsie Dona Meade Short. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Eddie Bennett, Sr.; one son, Harold Eddie Bennett, Jr.; three brothers, Acree Edward Short, Vesta Bernard Short, and Vernon Dale Short; and one sister, Dorothea Short Edminster. Mrs. Bennett was a member of Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church and was a former clerk with Love's Supermarket. She was a Gretna High School graduate; a member of Thomas Carter Chapter DAR, and a member of the Gretna Chapter No. 118 Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by one son, David Anthony Bennett and wife, Stacey of Locust Grove; one daughter, Diane Bennett Moon and husband, Vernon of Gretna; one sister, Theresa Short DePew of Williamsburg; five grandchildren, Tracy Moon Hughes and husband, Bob of Mechanicsville, Terri Moon Sanders and husband, Gary of Gretna, Carol Ann Bennett of Covington, GA, Jason Eddie Bennett of Gretna and Victoria Elizabeth Bennett of Houston, TX; and three great-grandchildren, Gary Michael Sanders, Olivia Grace Sanders, and Ian Robert Hughes.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, December 10, 2017 at Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church by Rev. Sharon Forbes. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Vernon Moon, 704 South Main Street, Gretna.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Gretna Volunteer Fire Department, the Gretna Rescue Squad, Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church, or to your favorite charity.
