Ryland "Penhooks" Farris

Hurt…….Ryland "Penhooks" Thomas Farris, age 74 of Hurt died Friday, February 19, 2016 at his residence.
Born October 12, 1941 in Pittsylvania County he was a son of the late Samuel David Farris, Sr. and Carrie Mae Irby Farris. He was predeceased by three brothers, Kenneth Farris, Sr., Calvin Farris and Donny Farris. Mr. Farris was a former employee of Southern Railroad and was an Army Veteran having served in Germany. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, feeding birds, fishing, turkey hunting and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
He is survived by three brothers, Sam Farris, Jr. and his wife, Frances of Hurt, Ted Farris and his wife, Judy of Draper, UT, and Roy Farris of Smyrna, TN; seven sisters, Betty Dodds and her husband, Lloyd of Upland, CA, Carolyn Hall and her husband, John of Hurt, Lucy Smith and her husband, James of Glendora, CA, Mary Pugh and her husband, Grady of Gretna, Lois Wheeler and her husband, Wayne of Hurt, Peggy Harward and her husband, Calvin of Mapleton, UT and Judy Ball of Clinton, UT; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services with Military Honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232 will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 22, 2016 at the Farris Family Cemetery by President Raymond Elliott and Wayne Wheeler.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Wayne Wheeler, 1808 Izaak Walton Road, Hurt.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the SPCA of Pittsylvania County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 936, Chatham, VA 24531.
