Penhook……….On January 28, 2013 Ruby Oakes Carter, age 92 of Gretna, formerly of Penhook took her journey to heaven to be with her Lord and Savior. With all of her heart she loved God and her family.
Born February 10, 1920 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Preacher James Henry Oakes and Nora Mattox Oakes. She was predeceased by her husband, Jesse Lemuel Carter; three brothers, Bennett Oakes, Ray Oakes, and Samuel Oakes; one sister, Doris Grizzel; one grandson, Mark Fuller; and a sister-in-law, Starn Carter. Mrs. Carter was a member of Museville Christian Church and retired from Bassett-Walker. She enjoyed reading her bible, babysitting her grandchildren, spending time with her family, singing and praying.
She is survived by two daughters, Claire Arrington and husband, Melvin of Penhook and Fern Fuller and husband, Jerry of Chatham; two brothers, James Oakes of Chatham and Edward Oakes of Chatham; two sisters, Clarice Oakes of Chatham and Lois Ann Stigall of Hurt; five grandchildren, Lynn Tucker and husband, Bobby, Anthony Fuller, Susan Arrington, Joe Fuller and wife, Stephanie, Lee McClenny and husband, Kenneth; ten great-grandchildren, Ben, Jonathan, Clay, and Sam Tucker, Brittany, Luke, and Mariah Fuller, Brandon, Claire, and Avery McClenny; and one great-great granddaughter, Kurstin Tucker. Mrs. Carter is also survived by Mrs. Crawley Davis who was Ruby's wonderful friend and roommate from Gretna Health Care for many years.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Museville Christian Church by Rusty Owen, Minister, Bob Moulden, Minister, Ted Clifton, Minister, and Steve Hayes, Minister. Burial will follow in the Carter Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends and family in celebration of Ruby's life from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Museville Christian Church.
The family would like to thank the staff at Gretna Health and Rehab for the love and care they gave Ruby. They worked hard to make Ruby's life full and busy. She loved all of them and they loved her. In her last days, the family was blessed by their warm and loving care.
