Ronald Augustus Peterson, age 88 of Gretna, VA, left this earthly realm on Monday, December 22, 2025 at the Gretna Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born June 11, 1937 in Burnsville, NC, he was the son of the late Augustus Raymond Peterson and the late Ida Adkins Peterson. He was predeceased by one brother, Richard Peterson, and his many beloved cats, including Sunny, Thomasina, Oliver, and Taffy.

Ron was a man of integrity and responsibility, who cared deeply for his family, his church, and most especially his wife Carol, whom he courted most faithfully even up to his death. Even when he had to roll his wheelchair into her room in the Gretna Health and Rehabilitation Center, he still did, even if "just to watch her sleeping."

In his earlier years, he loved taking his daughter to see the Lynchburg Hillcats play baseball, throwing peanut shells on the ground, and eating Bit-O-Honey and Moon Pies. He always liked his food, including the greens at the Danview in Danville, and the whole menu of The Colonial in Rustburg. He loved playing Monopoly and Chinese Checkers, and watching Turner Classic Movies and discussing the host introductions.

He had a lengthy career in education, spanning over 40 years of service, first as an English teacher at Bassett High School in Bassett, Va, where he met Carol, and then as a guidance counselor at the Gretna Junior High and other Pittsylvania County schools.

In addition to his wife, Carol Peterson, he is survived by his daughter Kathryn Peterson, his brother, Reid Peterson, of Stone Mountain, GA, and his sister, Nelda Wilson, of Burnsville, NC. He is also survived by four cherished nieces and two beloved nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 29, 2025 at the First Baptist Church of Gretna by Rev. R.G. Rowland. Burial will follow in Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the First Baptist Church of Gretna.
