Richard M. Johnston, Jr. age 83, of Providence, NC, passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at his residence.

Mr. Johnston was born on December 17, 1941, in Danville, VA, a son of the late, Richard M. Johnston, Sr. and Harriet Stephens Johnston.

Mr. Johnston lived his life in Caswell County where he was a tobacco farmer until his retirement. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as 1st Lt. 101st Airborne from 1965 until 1968. He served in the Vietnam War from 1966-1967 and in the 66th Ranger Company. Mr. Johnston was a man of strong Christian faith and was a member of Community Baptist Church. Mr. Johnston was a 1960 graduate of Bartlett Yancey High School and earned his degree in agriculture from NC State University. He was an avid outdoorsman and bear hunter and also served on the Caswell County Planning Board.

Mr. Johnston is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Nowlin Johnston; children, Laura Heaton Thompson (Roy) of Blanch, N.C., William Russell Johnston (Whitney Brandon) of Providence, N.C., Stephanie J. Eggleston (Frank Lee), of Richmond, Va., and Julius Johnston, IV (Ashley) of New York, N.Y.; grandchildren, Ryan Cole Thompson, Jameson Anne Johnston, Julianne Johnston, Joel Johnston, Alexandria Johnston and Carly Johnston

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Julius Johnston, III and Paul Taylor Johnston and sister, Harriet Stephens Johnston.

A memorial service to honor Richard's life will be held on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at 10 AM at Community Baptist Church with Pastor Mitch Cifers officiating. The family will receive friends after the service and at other times the family will be at the residence. Military Honors will be conducted by VFW Post 7316 and American Legion Post 89.
