Gretna……….Russell Reed Mayhew, age 95 of Gretna, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 2, 2026 at Gretna Health and Rehab surrounded by his family.

Born June 30, 1930 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late George Calvin Mayhew and Myrtle Shelton Mayhew. He was predeceased by his wife, Joyce Simpson Mayhew; two brothers, Lanier Mayhew and Stover "Poky" Mayhew; and three sisters, Hazel Rowland, Marge Younger and Barbara Bowler. He worked for Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative for over 43 years and was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher and RA leader. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by a daughter, Ellen Prato (Tom); twin sons, Mark Mayhew (Ellen) and Alan Mayhew (Kim); 6 grandchildren, Jennifer Judy (Patrick), Allison Prato Carney (Kyle), Phillip Mayhew (Hillary), Michael Mayhew (Julia), Amanda Sullivan (Tylor) and Cassidy Stephens (Ryan); and 9 great-grandchildren.

The family extends a Special Thank You to Irene Dove for her long term care and concern and to Elwood Bowles in providing transportation for Mark and Alan.

Graveside services with military honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232 will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 4, 2026 at the Greenfield Baptist Church Cemetery by Rev. R.G. Rowland.
