Gretna…..Raymond Garland Rowland, Sr., age 90 of Gretna died Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at his residence.
Born November 15, 1922 in Pittsylvania County he was a son of the late James "Jim" Rowland and Lula Bailess Rowland. He was predeceased by four brothers, Odie Rowland, Elwood Rowland, Harley Rowland, and Herman Rowland; and five sisters, Blanche Woodson, Annie Saunders, Homie Jones, Jeanette Crawley, and Adell Shelton. He was a member and deacon of Greenfield Baptist Church; and was a farmer. Mr. Rowland was an Army Veteran of World War II; and a member of the American Legion Post 232, and DAV Chapter 19.
He is survived by his wife, Violet Irby Rowland of the residence; one son, Rev. R.G. Rowland, Jr. and wife, Margie of Gretna; two grandchildren, Corey Rowland and wife, Kellie of Gretna, and Mandy Bennett and husband, Jamie of Gretna; two great-grandchildren, Trey Bennett, and Camdyn Bennett; and two step-great-grandchildren, Tyler Taylor, and Tanner Taylor.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 1, 2013 at Greenfield Baptist Church by Rev. David Turbyfill. Burial with Military Honors by the Virginia National Guard Honor Guard will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son and daughter-in-law, Rev. R.G. Rowland, Jr. and wife, Margie, 692 Midway Road, Gretna.
