Hurt……….Pencie Mayhew Rowland, age 92 of 597 Jasper Wood Road, Hurt died Thursday, July 26, 2012 at Autumn Care Nursing and Rehab Center in Altavista.
Born September 24, 1919 in Pittsylvania County she was a daughter of the late Rison Elwood Mayhew, Sr. and Rebecca Willis Mayhew. She was predeceased by her husband Jip S. Rowland; five brothers, Albert Mayhew, Snow Mayhew, Carroll Mayhew, George Mayhew, and Gerald Mayhew; and two sisters, Agnes Short, and Ruby Shelton. Pencie was a home maker who stayed at home and took care of her children and aging parents. She was a GREAT cook and enjoyed her family coming to her home for a meal. She enjoyed her vegetable garden and did lots of canning and freezing. Pencie also loved planting lots of flowers and having fresh flowers in her home. She was a great seamstress and when her daughters were young, made beautiful dresses and other clothes for school and church. She attended Motley Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Jerry Rowland and special friend, Jean Worsham of Altavista, and Dennis Rowland of Hurt; three daughters, Anne French and husband, Rob of Forest, Ellen Creasy of Gretna, and Mary Lou Gunn and special friend, Jr. Dalton of Altavista; one brother, R.E. Mayhew, Jr. & wife, Jane of Cheraw, SC; one sister-in-law, Odessa Mayhew of Danville; six grandchildren, Robin Cowart (Ron), Jeff Rowland (Sharon), Kelly Evans (Stacy), Heath Creasy (Morgan), Bess Cox (David) and Jason Rowland (Jessica); 10 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2012 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Rev. R.G. Rowland. Burial will follow in the Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
The family would like to thank the staff at Autumn Care for the excellent care that she received.
