Gretna……Opal Moorefield Saunders, age 97 of Gretna died Monday, May 22, 2017 at Autumn Care in Altavista.
She was born on October 15, 1919 in Pittsylvania County to the late Grover and Mattie Haynes Moorefield. Mrs. Saunders was predeceased by her husband, Jack Saunders; and two sisters, Lena Wooldridge and Hazel Eades.
She was the oldest member of Piney Grove Baptist Church, she enjoyed her Sunday School Class and the many church activities. She loved her flowers and loved all individuals she came in contact with and was so faithful to send cards. She loved UVA Basketball & NASCAR. She was a homemaker, loved to cook, loved her neighbors and family but most of all she loved her Church and her Lord.
Opal is survived by her son, Carroll Saunders and wife, Christine of Gretna; her daughter, Sandra Osborne and husband, Emory of Hurt; grandchildren, Wayne Saunders and Nanci Jo Dodson, Jason Osborne and Norma Saunders; two great-grandchildren, Rebecca and husband, Pete Davis and Cecelia Saunders; two sisters, Eula Dillion and Mildred Midkiff of Hurt; and a brother, Onyx Moorefield of Ocoee, Florida.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Piney Grove Baptist Church by Pastor Matthew Speck. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Emory Osborne, 2305 Shula Drive, Hurt.
The family would like to thank everyone for their visits to mama and the many cards she received, and especially for the loving care she received from the nurses from Autumn Care. She had a wonderful roommate at Autumn Care, Hazel Barley. Again may God bless each of you for your kindness.
