Altavista…..Mattie Onida Hughes, age 84 of Altavista died Friday, November 8, 2013 at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born November 29, 1928 in Campbell County she was a daughter of the late Vander Doss and Martha Ida Dunkley Doss. She was predeceased by two brothers, John Doss and Warren Doss. Mrs. Hughes was a CNA with Camelot, a self-employed caregiver for many years and was a member of Hyland Heights Baptist Church. She enjoyed crafts especially ceramics; and interior design. She loved her dog Sambo.
She is survived by her husband, Dave Hughes of the residence; one son, Andy Thruston and his wife, Denise of Huddleston; one daughter, Ruth Ferrell and her husband, Billy of Hurt; two brothers, Ed Doss and his wife, Carrie of Hurt, and Lawrence Doss of Altavista; two sisters, Lavita Hall of Altavista, and Nora Haynes and her husband, Bob of Hurt; seven grandchildren, Dr. Joey Anthony (Angie), Lisa Edwards (Alan), Beth Thurman (Thomas) Michelle Ferrell, Stacey Woods (Phil), Nick Thruston (Christen), and Emily Thruston; eight great-grandchildren, Christopher Anthony (Brittany), Heather Anthony, Hannah Anthony, Lydia Anthony, Lee Thurman, Tyler Thurman, Claire Thruston, and Hudson Woods; one great-great-grandson, Carson Anthony; many nieces and nephews; and many friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 P.M. Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Rev. Carl Weiser, and Dr. Joey Anthony. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:00 P.M. Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.
