Gretna...Noreen Gordon peacefully went home to be with The Lord on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at the Gretna Health and Rehab Center. Born on October 11, 1925 in Woodbine, MD, she was the daughter of the late Charles Francis Layton and Pearl Brandenburg Layton. Noreen grew up a farmer's daughter in Florence, MD where she attended the one room elementary school and graduated from Lisbon High School. She worked in Baltimore until the love of her life, Johnnie Gordon, came marching home from World War II. They were married and settled in Florence to raise a family. Noreen was a homemaker and proudly touched the lives of many children as Lisbon Elementary's very first teacher's aide. She loved people, especially children. She enjoyed baking bread and cookies; and was a friend to everyone. Noreen was a lifelong member of Jennings Chapel United Methodist Church. Her family and church family meant everything to her. She was predeceased by her husband, John Mills Gordon, Jr., and a son-in-law, Jimmy Holt. She is survived by two daughters, Eileen Clark and her husband, Jimmie of Gretna, VA, and Jan Gordon of Woodbine, MD; one sister, Shirley Smith and her husband, Robert of Mt. Airy, MD; one grandson, Timothy Clark and his wife, Gretchen of Gretna, VA; two great-grandsons, John Gordon Clark, and Suter Blair Clark; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Gretna Health and Rehab Center for the love and care given to Noreen in these last months and a special thanks to her lifetime friends and neighbors who never stopped praying for her. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at the residence of her grandson, Timothy Clark and his wife, Gretchen, 3812 West Gretna Road, Gretna, VA. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2013 followed by a service at 11 a.m. at Jennings Chapel United Methodist Church by Pastor Bob Cook and Rev. Paul Shoffeitt. Burial will follow in Jennings Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Jennings Chapel United Methodist Church, 2601 Jennings Chapel Road, Woodbine, MD, 21797 or to www.SamaritansPurse.org.
