Gretna…..Rev. Neville Sydnor Shelton, age 91 of 315 Vaden Drive, Gretna died Friday, December 27, 2013 at his residence.
Born February 22, 1922 in Pittsylvania County he was the youngest of seven children born to the late William Sydnor Shelton and Virginia Bethel Shelton. He was predeceased by four brothers, Douglas Shelton, Garolyn Shelton, Ollis (Monk) Shelton, and Otis Shelton; one sister, Virginia Reynolds; and one grandson, James Sydnor Shelton. Mr. Shelton was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gretna for over 80 years where he served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and was a member of the Fishermen and Countrymen. He was the Lay Minister at Round Pond Baptist Church for 10 years and the Minister at Riceville Baptist Church for nine years. Mr. Shelton was a butcher for over 65 years; and the co-owner of B & S Food Market and Shelton Brothers Food Market. He was the Gretna Citizen of the Year in 2005.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Lucille Yeager Shelton of the residence; one son, Paul S. Shelton and his wife, Becky of Gretna; two daughters, Carole Lattimer of Virginia Beach, and Betty Hardy and her husband, Herman of Gretna; one sister, Regina Phillips of Gretna; 9 grandchildren, Alan (Kara) Lattimer, Brian (Kristine) Lattimer, Charles Lattimer, Wendy (Billy) Reese, Holly Boles, Jessica (Jonathan) Rigney, Andrew (Mary) Shelton, Brandon (Jessica) Shelton and Rachel Shelton; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Monday, December 30, 2013 at the First Baptist Church of Gretna by Rev. Jonathan Hilliard, and Rev. Kristen White. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. Sunday, December 29, 2013 at the First Baptist Church of Gretna and other times will be at the residence.
