Gretna: Nannie Wyatt Eanes, 97, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Friday morning, November 11, 2011 at her residence. Mrs. Eanes was the only child of James and Annie Clay Wyatt born in Halifax County, June 15, 1914. She was the wife for over 60 years to the late Coleman Taft Eanes.
Mrs. Eanes is survived by her two daughters, Shirley Eanes Hammond and her husband John (who loved and cared for her just as though she was his own mother), and her "special child", Barbara Ann Eanes, Gretna VA. Also, her beloved granddaughter, Connie Parrish Beekman and her husband Paul of Powhatan, and 2 precious great grandchildren, Douglass William Beekman III of Annandale VA, and Dustin Wyatt Beekman and wife Amber of Glen Allen VA; 3 great-great-grandchildren, Maddox Christopher Beekman, Taylor Wyatt Beekman and Chesney Nicole Beekman of Glen Allen. She is survived also by 3 dear sisters-in-law, Ruth Eanes Johnson, Katie Eanes Bishop and Eudora Eanes Roach all of Gretna, her special cousins who were like sisters, Bernice Bobbitt, Flossie Denton, Gracie Newcomb, Dora Bentley, and Aretta Layne, and many more cousins, nieces and nephews.
"Nan" as she is known to many, was an accomplished gardener (both vegetables and flowers). She supplied the church with flower arrangements for many years, as well as sending baskets of her flowers to funerals. She especially enjoyed dahlias and at one time had over 50 varieties. No yard was complete without her flower beds. She was quite the cook, quilt maker, and crochet artist. She had many blue ribbons from the Salem Fair for her crochet handkerchiefs, quilts and canned goods. Most of her friends have been the recipient of one or more of her handkerchiefs and pillows. Her true joy in life was giving to others.
Mrs. Eanes was a charter member of the Hurt Pentecostal Holiness Church where she, for many years, was active in the Women's Auxiliary, choir, missions, and Sunday School. She not only generously supported the church with her tithes and offerings but also gave generously to other needs. Being an orphan herself, she was very compassionate and generous, supporting for many years orphan children in Haiti. She funded the building of the Eanes Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church in Kanke India.
The funeral and celebration of life will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 13, 2011 at the Hurt Pentecostal Holiness Church, Grit Road, Hurt VA by Rev. Mark Hopkins, and Ronnie Simpson. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Gretna Burial Park immediately following the funeral.
Visitation will be at Colbert Moran Funeral Home, Gretna from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, November 12, 2011, and other times at the home at 211 Washington Street, Gretna.
