Gretna……….Sadie Marie Smith Pope, age 93 of Altavista died Thursday, September 5, 2024 at Autumn Care Nursing and Rehab of Altavista.

Born September 18, 1930 in North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late George David Smith and Lucille Mason Smith.  She was predeceased by two sons, Richie Pope and Eddie Pope; two brothers, John Smith and Howard Smith; and one sister, Anna Louise "Polly" Parrish.  Marie was a member of Midway Baptist Church and she retired from Klopman Mills.  She enjoyed spending time with her family; and doing yardwork, especially mowing and tending to flowers.

She is survived by three sons, Larry Pope and wife, Linda of Apex, NC, Terry Pope and wife, Carrie of Sumter, SC, and Donnie Pope and wife, Charlene of Chatham; one daughter, Sherry Newby and husband, Randy of Gretna; two daughters-in-law, Gwen Pope of Hurt and Jean Wilson of Danville; 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, two great-great-grandchildren on the way and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 5:00 p.m. Sunday, September 8, 2024 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Aaron Johnson.  Burial will follow in Hillcrest Burial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, September 8, 2024 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law, Donnie and Charlene Pope, 400 Galveston Road, Chatham, VA 24531.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Midway Baptist Church, 2136 Midway Road, Gretna, VA 24557 or to the charity of your choice.
