Obituary

Margot Elisabeth Richter Mayhew 79, of Gretna, Virginia, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday May 2nd after a 9 month battle with glioblastoma (brain cancer) at her home surrounded by her loved ones. She had a stroke on February 2, 2018 and was found to have a brain tumor in August.

Margot was born in Hessen, Germany on August 16, 1939, two weeks before the start of World War II. She was the daughter of her late parents, Heinrich Richter and Anna Barbara Gies Richter. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Willie Richter in Germany. She came to the United States in 1962 with her husband, Roger Allen Mayhew, whom she met on May 3, 1959 while he was stationed in Fulda, Germany in the US Army. They married on May 18, 1960.

She is survived by her husband, Roger of the residence, her children; Roger R. Mayhew and his wife Connie, Sandra Raker and her husband Mark, Debra Roach and her husband Mark and Barbara Hancock and her husband Rodney, as well as 5 grand-children; Ronnie Mayhew and his wife Julia, Laurie Roach, Bobby Roach, Jacob Hancock, and Matthew Hancock, as well as 5 great-grand children; Elianna, Ceilidh, Josiah, Lydia, and Hannah. She also has four siblings in Europe; Mary Rossler, Siegmund Richter, Andrea Richter, and Stefan Richter, as well as numerous nephews and nieces in the U.S. and Europe.

Margot was a housewife and also spent time working as a prayer counselor for CBN Ministries. She was a prayer warrior and after accepting Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1973, she spent much time praying for her family, friends and strangers, and instilled great faith in those who spent time with her including her children and grand-children.

Over the years, she spent time volunteering in food ministries for the needy, helping with vacation Bible schools and other children's ministries. She also spoke to different schools and various classes of students about Germany and her life growing up during World War II. She enjoyed studying Gods Word and was an avid supporter of ministries that helped orphans, disaster victims, victims of human trafficking, the disabled as well as ministries that shared the Gospel of Jesus Christ around the world. She was also an advocate for the unborn children and supported the pro-life cause for many years. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, painting and was very talented at restoring broken things and creating something new. She always enjoyed picking berries and going to orchards . Among other recipes, she loved making her delicious grape juice, fox grape jelly and potato salad for family and friends.

Recently a scholarship was established in her name by the Danville Area Humane Society for those who seek a career in animal welfare. For many years, she has loved dogs, cats, wild and farm animals and instilled that love into her family. Though in recent years, she only had two dogs, "Bear" and "Fudge", who have since crossed over the Rainbow Bridge, she was always willing to help others with their pets when needed. She had a special bond with several of her "grand-pets".

The single most important things in her life was Jesus Christ; her relationship with Him and sharing Him and His love with others.
