Gretna…..Mary Louise Hinman Schmidt, age 96 of Gretna died Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Gretna Health and Rehab.
Born November 2, 1916 in Altoona, PA, she was a daughter of the late Louis Franklin Pierce Hinman and Mary Gross Nissley Hinman. She was married to the late Col. Herman Albert Schmidt on August 12, 1937 in Altoona, PA. She was a skilled and accomplished military wife and during her husband's 30 year military career lived in 6 states, Japan and Okinawa. She lived in Alexandria for 20 years and moved to Gretna in 1988, following the death of her husband. She was a member of Aldersgate Methodist Church in Alexandria.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by two brothers, Franklin Pierce Hinman, and Richard Burnell Hinman; and one sister, Carolyn Elizabeth Rossignol.
She is survived by two sons, William Carl Schmidt, III and his wife, Marcy of Shaker Heights, OH, and Herman Albert Schmidt, Jr. and his wife Mary Ann of Virginia Beach; one daughter Mary Katherine (Kate) Berger and her husband, Eddie Walker of Gretna; one sister, Marjorie Jane Brinkley Shaw of Bradford, PA; two granddaughters, Catherine Schmidt Quinlan and Martha Jane Schmidt Cindric; six grandsons, William Carl Schmidt, Jr., Andrew Jonathan Schmidt, Samuel Adam Schmidt, William Hunter Schmidt, Jacob Carrington Berger and Andrew Dallas Berger; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 5, 2013 in the dining room at Gretna Health and Rehab Center by Rev. Jonathan Hilliard.
A graveside ceremony will take place at Arlington National Cemetery where she will be interred with her husband.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Kate Berger.
