With heavy hearts and abiding love, we announce the passing of Lela Cope Gibson, who left this world peacefully on April 13, 2025, at the age of 92.

Born on September 2, 1932, in the hills of Swain County, North Carolina, Lela was the beloved daughter of Pearlie Monroe Cope and Della Bryant Cope. She was one of five siblings, preceded in death by her brother Pearlie Cope Jr. and her sister Frances Cope, and survived by her brother, Frank Cope and her sister, Margaret Chism and daughter-in-law, Jane Gibson.

Lela married the love of her life, Wilbur "Tiny" Gibson, with whom she built a life grounded in love, family, and faith. Together they raised three sons — Daniel Gibson (Debra), Clinton Gibson (Regina), and David Gibson (Candida) — who were the pride and joy of her life.

A faithful member of Christian Life Church, Lela lived her life guided by grace, kindness, and quiet strength. She found joy in the simple pleasures: the rhythm of a good song, the pages of a cherished book, the delicate beauty of fresh flowers, and the sparkle of her beloved knick-knack collections, which adorned her home with warmth and character. Ever the supporter of small indulgences, she kept the Avon lady in business for years with her love of life's little luxuries.

Lela's family tree grew strong and wide, blessing her with nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She cherished each one, filling their lives with laughter, wisdom, and unconditional love.

To know Lela was to be touched by her kindness, her humor, and her unwavering devotion to those she held dear. She was deeply loved not only by her family but also by countless friends and members of her community who were fortunate enough to share in her light. Her legacy of love, faith, and family will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Funeral service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 17, 2025 at Christian Life Church by Rev. Michael Turner. Burial will follow in the Gibson Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at Christian Life Church.

Though she has left this earthly home, Lela's spirit blooms eternal in every flower, every dance, every cherished memory. She will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.
