Lawrence "Larry" Gilbert Smith Jr., age 72 of Gretna, VA, passed away Friday, October 27, 2023, peacefully at his home, surrounded by family and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence G. Smith, Sr., his mother, Shirley Maude Clark Smith, his sister, Kathy and his brother-in-law, Basil.

He was born in Romeo, Michigan, April 5, 1951. He went to Almont High School where he wrestled and played football. Upon graduating in 1969 he attended Ferris State University, thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1971. Larry served for 12 years before beginning his career with the Department of Defense. He retired in 2010.  After retirement Larry and Diane moved to Gretna, restored their dream home, and have made many new friends.

Larry married the love of his life, Diane Cox Smith, in October 1986.  In addition to his wife, he is survived by their four children, Melissa Smith Riley, Tracy Smith Peters and husband, Bobby, Dean Sunderland and wife Toni, and Melissa Lanham and husband, Joe; 11 grandchildren, Eden, Jake, Ellie, Haley, Melani, Eric, Stevie, Josh, Danny, Kenny, and Adrianna; his sister, Edith and, brother, Allan.

Memorial services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 10, 2023 at the First Baptist Church of Gretna by Rev. Bob Ballance.  Interment of ashes with Military Honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232 will follow in Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall  and other times will be at the residence.
