Gretna.…….Laurie Shelton Moran, age 56 of Gretna died Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at Duke University Medical Center after a long battle with Cancer.
Born August 16, 1960 in Danville, she was a daughter of the late Edrie Lee "Pete" Shelton and Ruth Martin Shelton. She was also predeceased by a son, Bryant Moran and a brother-in-law, Aubrey Yeatts.
Laurie was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Gretna, having served as Deacon, mission team chair, finance team chair, pianist, bell choir member, Sunday school teacher and past clerk. Laurie was a graduate of Lynchburg College, where she received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the school in 2016. She is the President of the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce, a position she has held since January 2002. She was designated a Certified Chamber Executive (CCE) in 2006. Laurie has previously worked as the Communications Manager for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's Danville plant, as President of the Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce, as editor of the Gretna Gazette and Star Tribune, and as a consultant to develop the strategic plan for Pittsylvania County Schools. Laurie currently serves on the Danville Regional Foundation Board of Directors. Laurie previously served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE). She is a former president and member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (VACCE) where she was named VACCE Executive of the Year in 2005. Laurie is a past chair of the National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB). She has served on the Board of Directors of NAWB and previously held the positions of Vice Chair and Secretary. Laurie served on the Board and is a past president of the West Piedmont Workforce Investment Board. She also chaired the Dan River Region Collaborative's participation in the National Fund for Workforce Solutions and was a member of ACT's National Workforce Solutions Advisory Board. A member and past president of the Danville-Riverview Rotary Club, Laurie is a past Assistant Governor for Area 7 of Rotary International District 7570 and served as the District Membership Chair. Laurie is the immediate past chair of the Board of Directors of Smart Beginnings Danville Pittsylvania. She is a past chair of United Way of Danville-Pittsylvania County and The Launch Place. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Council for Rural Virginia as well as on the Workforce Advisory Board of Danville Community College, on the advisory committee for the Barkhouser Free Enterprise Center at Danville Community College, and on the advisory committee for National College. She also served on the Board of Trustees of Danville Regional Medical Center.
She is survived by her husband, Bruce Moran of the residence; two sons, Jeffrey Bond and wife, Megan of Danville and Austin Moran of Gretna; three sisters, Joan Yeatts of Gretna, Alice Gourley and husband, Barry of Danville and Susan Elliott and husband, Milton of Gretna; two grandchildren, Alex Bond and Evie Bond; and her mother-in-law, Fran Moran.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 16, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Gretna by the Rev. Dr. Roy M. Ford, Jr. and Rev. R.G. Rowland. Private burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 15, 2017 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
