Gretna……..Kenneth Lee Hershman, age 75 of Gretna died Friday, September 18, 2020 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born February 9, 1945 in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Samuel Wilson Hershman and Delma Rowland Hershman. He was predeceased by a daughter, Angela Dawn Hershman; and a brother, Ray Hershman. Kenneth was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, head of the cemetery committee, and he took care of the building and grounds, in fact he mowed the Greenfield grounds for 38 years and even helped his grandpa Tack Rowland mow the grounds when he was a young boy. Kenneth made the soup for the church every October, and helped cook breakfast at the church as well. He was an Army Veteran of Vietnam serving in the First Calvary Division. He was a member of American Legion Post 232 and member of VFW Post 873. Mr. Hershman was a retired mechanic with Ray's Welding and Auto Repair; and loved listening to country music, he never turned his radio off. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nera May Brooks Hershman of the residence; one brother, Leonard Hershman of Gretna; one granddaughter, Savanna Marie Crews and husband, Blake of Gretna; one great-granddaughter, Sophia Grace Crews; and two step-great-grandchildren, Christopher Crews, and Chloe Crews.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 21, 2020 at Greenfield Baptist Church by Rev. R.G. Rowland. Burial with Military Honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232 will follow in the church cemetery.
The family request due to COVID-19 that everyone attending the funeral service please wear a mask. The funeral service will be available on the radio in the church parking lot on 100.1 F.M.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Greenfield Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 875, Gretna, VA 24557.
