Roanoke……….Ella Kathlyn "Kay" Smith Grinnell, age 82 of Roanoke, passed away Monday, December 18, 2023 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital after a long battle with Alzheimer's.

Born August 27, 1941 in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Lester Leroy Smith, Sr. and Lucy Summers Smith. She was predeceased by her husband, Marcus Wayne Grinnell, Sr.; and her daughter, Dawn G. Brain. Mrs. Grinnell was a member of Gretna Christian Church and worked in daycare for many years. She enjoyed singing in the church choir and playing the auto harp.

She is survived by one son, Marcus W. Grinnell, Jr. and wife, Carol of Roanoke; two brothers, David Smith and wife, Nellie of TN, and Lee Smith, Jr. and wife, Debbie of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, Kimberly Keister and husband, Ricky, Daniel Brain, and Dylan Brain; three great-grandchildren, Brooke Shively, Malcolm Vincent, Jr., and Destinee Holland; two great-great-grandchildren, Jaxten Hickman, and Braxten Hickman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 22, 2023 at Liberty Christian Church by Lee Ashley, Minister.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1 to 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 22, 2023 at Liberty Christian Church.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations be made to the  Alzheimer's Association.
