"J.T." John Thomas Shields, Jr.'s Obituary
Chatham……."J.T" John Thomas Shields, Jr. sometimes known as "George Smith" or "Smitty," age 81 of Chatham died Wednesday, March 2, 2011 in Chatham as the result of an automobile accident.
Born May 2, 1929 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late John Thomas Shields, Sr. and Hattie Jane Tuck Shields. He was predeceased by four brothers, H.P. Shields, Darrell Shields, Stanley "Red" Shields, and Garland Shields; and a sister, Molly Neighbors. He was an US Army Veteran serving with the 11th Airborne Division, Service Company 511th Airborne Infantry Regiment. He received the Occupation Medal (Japan), and the Parachute and Glider Badge, and he also served with the First Calvary Division. He was a member of Mountain View Christian Church, and a retired auto mechanic. Mr. Shields enjoyed working on cars, feeding birds, passing out gold dollars, and spending time with his grandson, J.T.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Fairbanks Shields of the residence; six sons, Tim Smith, of Chatham, Danny Shields of Gretna, Gerald Shields of Gretna, John Thomas Shields III of Hurt, Richard Shields of Chatham, and Troy Smith of Chatham; one daughter, Devie Gibson of Chatham; two step-children, Malcolm Walters of Danville, and Piper Laurie Thornton of Chatham; two sisters, Gladys Yeatts of Gretna, and Virginia Tuck of Pittsville; and a number of grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 A.M. Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Greenpond Baptist Church by Rev. Steve Carlton. Burial with Military Honors by the Virginia National Guard, Honor Guard will follow in the Smith Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Friday, March 4, 2011 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of his son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Shelby Smith, 7496 Anderson Mill Road, Chatham.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Climax Volunteer Fire Department, 1876 Cooksburg Road, Chatham, VA 24531.
