Gretna………John David Hedrick, Sr., age 95 of Gretna died Thursday, September 16, 2021 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

Born September 12, 1926 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Ernest Alva Hedrick and Annie Short Hedrick.  He was predeceased by four brothers, Giles Hedrick, Shirley Hedrick, Henry Hedrick, and Malcolm Hedrick; and five sisters, Mary Newman, Virginia Hedrick, Vernell Barbour, Helen Walker, and Hazel Brown.  Mr. Hedrick served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and he attended Weatherford Primitive Baptist Church. He retired from Abbott Nutrition in Altavista and was a farmer.  His greatest pleasures in life were working on the farm and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mabel Goad Hedrick of the residence; his three children, Sandra Dalton and husband, Dennis of Gretna, Kim Adams and husband, Tim of Hurt, and David Hedrick and wife, Judy of Rustburg; three grandchildren, Kaye Ellen Dalton of Lynchburg, Jeremy Dalton of Ashburn, VA, and Katherine Adams and husband, Ben Setzer of Hurt; one great-grandchild, Madison Dalton of Gretna; one sister, Annie Bell Vasser of Gretna; a sister-in-law, Diane Scott and husband, Butch; two brothers-in-law, Elder Raymond Goad and wife, Ann, and Edward Goad; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 20, 2021 at Weatherford Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Raymond Goad and Elder Marvin Brumfield.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 2189 Brights Road, Gretna.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Centra Hospice and his caregivers, Vanessa Hubbard and Mason Norcutt, for the wonderful care given to him during his illness.
