“Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23:6
John David Harris of Gretna, age 73, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on October 29, 2026.
David was born on October 7, 1953, to William and Janie Harris. In 1973, he married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Crews Harris, beginning a beautiful marriage of 53 years. Their life together was built on a love that was steadfast and unconditional, grounded in faith and family. Together, they were blessed with two sweet daughters and three precious granddaughters, who became the joy of their lives and the pride of their hearts.
David spent most of his career working at Altavista Printing Company, now known as MidAtlantic Printers, Ltd. He was hardworking, intelligent, outgoing, and witty, and could find a creative solution to every problem. He had an easygoing, friendly personality and never seemed to meet a stranger. But above all else, David was a man of faith.
His love for the Lord was not something he simply talked about—it was something he lived. His strong and unwavering faith seemed to come naturally to him. David was a member of Straightstone Baptist Church in Long Island, Virginia, where he faithfully served through the years as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, and choir member.
David had a love of music, especially gospel and bluegrass, and he was blessed with a beautiful singing voice. He sang at countless church services and events and was a member of the Staunton River Boys. He often sang “Beulah Land” as a solo, sharing its message of longing for our eternal home.
Today, those who loved David grieve his absence, but they also rejoice in the promise he believed in so deeply. Beulah Land is no longer simply a place in a song. David has crossed that river. His earthly race is finished, his faith has become sight, and he has arrived at his eternal home. His family finds comfort in knowing that he is resting safely in the arms of Jesus. We can imagine him hearing those precious words, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” and joining the heavenly choir in praise.
David’s greatest legacy will not be found in the years he worked or the things he accomplished, but in the love he gave, the faith he shared, and the family he cherished. He leaves behind generations who will carry his laughter, his wisdom, and his love with them. Though he will be deeply missed, his family is grateful for the years God gave them with him and looks forward to the day when they will be reunited in heaven.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Peggy Harris; his daughters, Amy Libeau (Todd) and Leslie Hackworth (Travis); his granddaughters, Leah Libeau, Caroline Hackworth, and Faith Libeau; his brother, Mark Harris (Regina); and his sister-in-law, Sandra Crews. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Janie Harris; his in-laws, Edison and Jacqueline Crews; and his brother, William Harris Jr.
A service celebrating David’s life and faith will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 1, 2026 at Straightstone Baptist Church in Long Island by Pastor Jim Fox and Pastor David Bell. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
