South Hill……….John William Crawley, age 84 of South Hill died Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at his residence.
Born January 27, 1927 in Gretna, he was a son of the late Sam Henry Crawley and Irene Alma Towler Crawley. Mr. Crawley was predeceased by a sister, Myrtle Scott; and two brothers, Ray Elwood Crawley, and Thomas Ramsey Crawley. He was a member of South Hill Church of Christ and retired from working as a lineman for Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative for approximately 50 years. Mr. Crawley was a United States Navy Veteran where he served as a Seaman Second Class on the USS Reno and USS Princeton during WWII. Recently he received his Honorary Life Membership for being a member of the American Legion for 50 years. He enjoyed wood working and bird hunting.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Lucille Dalton Crawley of the residence; two daughters, Linda Kay Crawley Moore of Gretna, and Teresa John Crawley Hudson and her husband, Charles of South Hill; two grandchildren, Douglas Lee Moore, Jr. and his wife Dee of Charles City, and Pamela Yvonne Moore of Gretna; one brother, Sam (Pete) Henry Crawley and his wife Joyce of Gretna; and three sisters, Ruby C. Rowland of Roanoke, Agatha C. Shelton of Chatham, and Katherine Rowland of Gretna.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 19, 2011 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Larry Owen Minister, and Troy Hollandsworth, Minister. Burial with Military Honors by the Virginia National Guard, Honor Guard will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and other times will be at the residence of his daughter, Linda Moore, 1544 East Gretna Road, Gretna
