Obituary

J oe began his flight through life on March 6, 1949.  His mother and father Jean and Lawrence welcomed him as their first child.  He flew alone until his sister, Debbie and brother, Mark came along to complete their family.  They lived in a farming community in Halifax County.

Later during his flight, Joe was married to Brenda in 1967.  Their joint flight through life was blessed when Wendy and Vickie came along to make their life complete as a family.

The flight continues throughout our community and neighborhood.  Joe was the quiet neighbor, the steadfast one but the one you could count on if you needed any help.

Joe's flight plan was changed again when his daughters got married and blessed him with two great sons-in-law, Doug Mitchell and Stacy Compton.  Then the stars of the flight started arriving, those four wonderful grandchildren: Luke Madison, Olivia and Isabella.  They were the stars in the sky to Joe.  And Luke also shares Joe's love of flying.

Once again, Joe's life took a change of course and he was flying around alone to start his life once again.  He met the most amazing woman, named Cindy Cofer.  She has been the love of his life.  They have spent the past 15 years flying through life together.  Their travels led them to get their two fur babies, Chewy and Cocoa.  The boys are going to miss being in Joe's lap and their travels together.

Throughout this life, Joe's flight plan changed from the days flying an Ultralight plane around our neighborhood from the cow pasture up the road.  He got his pilot's license and later his hobby of flying model planes and drones.  He enjoyed his days at the Flying Field with the Gretna Radio Flyers and also flying them around in our neighborhood.  Joe also has had an impressive career with BWXT that spanned 53 years.

Joe has taken his final flight into the arms of his Lord and Savior on February 4, 2021.  He is reunited with his father, Lawrence, his friend and neighbor, Leslie, and so many other friends and family members.  Those of us left behind will continue our flights and keep our memories of time spent with Joe alive.

Joe has always been a well-respected member of the Moons Road neighborhood.  He has endured the pain and hardship through his illness with extreme calmness, wisdom and courage

The family wants to thank the neighbors, Walter and Tanya Saunders, Eula and Herman Worsham, Theresa Worsham, and Judy Moon for running errands, picking up things for us, etc.

The family would also like to thank Centra Hospice and Joe's nurse Debbie Anderson.  Joe's daughter Vickie is the most amazing Hospice nurse.  She has stayed around the clock to care for her Dad, giving his meds, checking his vitals, and keeping close watch over him.  Joe's other daughter, Wendy and her husband, Doug, came from North Carolina and has also stayed around the clock.

I would like to thank Joe and his family for the honor of writing this obituary.  I have been his neighbor for the last 51 years and his friend much longer than that.  Written with all by love, Judy Lewis Moon.
