Silver Springs, MD………Joan Bolling May, age 79 died Sunday, November 27, 2022 peacefully at her home in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Born June 7, 1943 in Gretna, Virginia she was a daughter of the late James Herman Bolling and Patsy Mattox Bolling. Joan was a graduate of Emory and Henry College with a BA in Music and The University of Maryland with a MM in Vocal Performance. Joan was an accomplished performer and a Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera auditions. After a career performing in the Middle Atlantic area, she was an Adjunct Professor at American University, The Catholic University of America, Montgomery College, Sweet Briar College and Ferrum College. She touched many lives, young and old, with her innate gift of teaching the finer points of vocal performance.

Surviving is her husband of fifty-one years, John H. (Hank) May; and a brother, Glenn Bolling of Gretna, Virginia.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2022 with services following at 1:00 p.m. at Francis J. Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd West, Silver Spring, MD.

Graveside services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 10, 2022 at Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden in Gretna, Virginia by Rev. R.G. Rowland.
