Obituary

Hurt…....Jean Mitchell Rowland, age 88 died peacefully on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at her home in Hurt, Virginia.

Born April 4, 1932 in Campbell County, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late John Robert Mitchell and Irene Bailey Mitchell.  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Anderson Woodell Rowland; her beloved son, Andy Keith Rowland; and seven Mitchell brothers, Jack, Bobby, John, Arthur, Walter, Billy and Ted.

Jean graduated from Virginia Commercial Business School and was a valued employee of the Lane Company in Altavista, working as a case goods statistician for 40 years.  She was a member of Motley Baptist Church and she lived her faith, praying daily and always helping where she saw need.  She was an avid reader and a wonderful cook.  Her bright warm smile welcomed everyone that entered her home.  Jean's greatest joy and passion was for her family.  Loved greatly, she will be missed dearly.

Jean is survived by her son, Gary Rowland and wife, Robin of Rustburg; her daughter, Shelby Crist and husband, Warren of Lynchburg.  "Gran Gran" was a doting grandmother to her four grandchildren, Carrington Crawford and wife, Joni, Dara Brown and husband, Brandon, Holly Capps and husband, Tom, and Tabitha Childress and husband, Michael.  She was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren; a special sister, Sue Blackstock and husband, Edwin of Altavista; a sister-in-law, Elsie Myers and husband, Douglas of Keysville; and other sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.
