Gretna……….Janie Mae Powell Johnson, age 85, of Gretna, VA entered her eternal home Wednesday, March 12,2025 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born October 7,1939, in Johnsonville SC, she was the daughter of the late Artis and Ilee Powell. She was married to her faithful husband Reverend Bert Johnson for 52 years and worked alongside him in pastoral ministry for over 40 years. After his death she continued her ministry serving at Summersett Baptist Church where she was an active member of the WMU, choir,  and many other ministries in the church. She will be remembered for her servant heart, delicious meals, and the quick wit that was often displayed. She was a faithful wife, loving mother, and a mama  known to spoil her grandchildren. A woman of deep committed faith, she was always ready to lend a helping hand and an encouraging word. Many in Gretna admired the  beautiful flowers growing in her yard on Leftwich Street which was her labor of love.

She was predeceased by her son, Jimmy Johnson; and brother Artis Powell Jr.

She was the loving mother of three daughters, Cynthia (Rodney) Fontaine of Lakeland FL, Nancy (Gregory) Vasser of Pittsville VA and Deborah (Kenny) Fitzgerald of Blairs VA.; one brother, Herman "Nig" Powell; six grandsons, Brandon Fontaine (Sarahann), Josh Fontaine (Marimarie), Brad Fontaine (Nicole), Daniel Vasser, Sr., Travis Fitzgerald and Sean Fitzgerald (Brooke) and thirteen great grandchildren, Seth, Gabriel, Ethan, Caleb, Lilah, Joel, Roman, Kingston, Silas, Asher, Daniel, Jr. Kirsten, and Kyleigh.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2025 at Summersett Baptist Church by Rev. Jason Andrews, Rev. Greg Hedrick and Pastor Ronnie Simpson.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2025 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
