Hurt……….James Steven "Spanky' Spangler, age 65 of Hurt died Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at his residence.

Born July 14, 1955 in Norfolk, he was a son of the late James Arnold Spangler and Rosa Lee Birdsong Mumford.  He was predeceased by two brothers, Edwin "Butch" Birdsong, and Robert "Bobby" Birdsong; and one sister, Mary Elizabeth "Nita" Birdsong.  Mr. Spangler attended Spring Road Baptist Church; and he was a retired U.S. Navy Veteran where he received a Service Medal.  He enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing.

He is survived by four sisters, Linda Gibson of Hurt, Rose "Peanut" Huff and husband, Dave of California, Loretta Bailess and husband, Carroll of Hurt, and Delores Pulliam and husband, Gary of Roanoke Rapids, NC; and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2020 at Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden by Ronnie Simpson with Military Honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232.

The family will receive friends at the residence.
