James Daniel "J.D." Haskins, age 81 of Chatham, passed away peacefully at his home on December 29, 2023.

J.D. was born November 29, 1942 to the late Noel B. Haskins and the late Pearl Shelton Haskins. J.D. proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Military Policeman. After returning home from service, he worked at the Piedmont Corp. in Altavista before leaving for his true passion, farming. He operated the family tobacco farm with his father and brother for almost forty years before retiring in 2017. He was an avid fisherman and bird hunter. He enjoyed watching his NASCAR races and watching his Braves play baseball. He always enjoyed the company of his two favorite bird dogs, Patches and Boomer. After his retirement, you could find him in his recliner watching Gunsmoke.

Mr. Haskins is predeceased by the mother of his two children, Betty Sue Thompson Haskins. Later in life he married June Marshall Hubbard Haskins who also predeceased him.

He is survived by his two daughters, Tammy Wright and husband Paul, and Teresa Blackstock and husband, Braxton; three grandsons, Austin Wright (Taylor Popovits), Caleb Wright (Alyssa McFalls), and Cody Snow; one great-grandson, Brenton Wright; his brother, Marvin R. Haskins. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Buddy Hubbard (Penny), Donna Shields (Billy), Angie Dalton, David Hubbard (Daphne), and Brian Hubbard (Debbie).

The family would also like to say a special thank you to his caregivers, Nancy Shannon, and Polly Rigney, and to Commonwealth Hospice.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 1, 2024 at Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham, Virginia by Rev. Daryl Joyce.  Military Honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232.

The family will receive friends at the residence of "J.D." Haskins.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Association, the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Disease, or to God's Pit Crew.
