Jacqueline Dowdy Rice, age 98 of Altavista passed away Monday, February 23, 2026 at Chatham Health and Rehab Center.

Born September 15, 1927 in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late Jesse Booker Dowdy, Sr. and Rosa Cox Dowdy.  She was predeceased by her husband, John Howard Rice; a sister, Lucille Dowdy Lambert; a brother, Jesse B. Dowdy, Jr.; and a nephew, David W. Lambert.  Mrs. Rice was a member of Penuel Baptist Church and she retired from Craddock Terry Shoe Company.  She enjoyed hunting, fishing and working puzzles.

She is survived by two nieces, Wanda Monroe and Cathy Chapman; two nephews, Terry Lee Lambert and Danny Dowdy; four great-nieces, Jessica Pillow, Brittney Daniels, Angie Viar and Kristy Lambert; three great-nephews, Christian Viar, Montana Monroe and Lucas Lambert; numerous great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; numerous step-children; and special friends, Charles and Juanita Butcher.

Memorial services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2026 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Pastor W.L. Pillow.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2026 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.
