Gretna…….William Jasper "Jack" Jennings, age 88 of Gretna died Thursday, March 24, 2022 at his residence.

Born July 29, 1933 in Halifax County, he was a son of the late Charlie Gilbert Jennings and Ruth Keesee Jennings.  He was predeceased by one daughter, Jan Jennings Wampler; one brother, Emmett Jennings; and three sisters, Virginia Foster, Glenn Clingempeel, and Nancy Bridges.

Mr. Jennings graduated from Virginia Tech in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Engineering. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and had a deep love for his country. 4-H was an important part of his life as well.  He began working at Mecklenburg Electric in 1960 and retired as District Manager for the Gretna District Office in 1998. He was an avid golfer and member of Cedars Country Club. He accrued many trophies but loved golf just for the sport and friendships.  During his retirement he enjoyed watching his birds come to his feeder, meeting with friends for coffee and laughs, and of course playing many rounds of golf. He was a man of God and an active member of the First Baptist Church of Gretna. Jack was quite the jokester commonly known for making others laugh.

Mr. Jennings was a loving husband, an amazing father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jean McDowell Jennings; two daughters, Amy Jennings Smith and husband, Dale of Winchester, and Mary Ellen Ortiz and husband, Frutoso of Harrisonburg; and proud Papa to five grandchildren, Megan Ortiz, John Wampler, Josselyn Wampler, Jeanette Smith, and Stephanie Smith.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 28, 2022 at the First Baptist Church of Gretna by Rev. Bob Ballance and Rev. Mike McDowell.  Burial with Military Honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232 will follow in County Line Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, March 27, 2022 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church of Gretna, P.O. Box 339, Gretna, VA or to County Line Baptist Church, 13146 Chatham Road, Java, VA 24565.
