Lynchburg………Iris Josephine "Miss Bootsie" Cundiff Powell, age 83 of Lynchburg died Friday, December 28, 2018 at the Summit Assisted Living in Lynchburg where she had been a resident since 2007.

Born November 22, 1935 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Beverly Davis Cundiff and Helen Josephine Southall Cundiff.  Mrs. Powell married James Frederick Powell in 1959.  He passed away on May 5, 2001.  She was predeceased by her brother, Dr. O.W. "Buddy" Cundiff, and a brother-in-law, Elwood Bolling.  She graduated from Gretna High School in 1954, graduated from the Roanoke Memorial School of Nursing in 1957, and from the University of Virginia with a BSN in Nursing in 1959.  She taught at Virginia Baptist School of Nursing when she and her husband lived in Lynchburg.  Mrs. Powell went on to earn a Master's degree from Radford University and later taught at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke and Alamance Community College in NC, as well as serving as a student services staff nurse later on in her career at Elon College in Elon, NC.

She is survived by a son, James F. Powell II of Eden, NC; a grandson, Matthew Powell of Whitsett, NC; three sisters, Hazel Cundiff Bolling of Gretna, Nancy Cundiff Truluck (Dalton) of Alexandria, and Arlene Davis Cundiff of Lynchburg; a special adopted sister, Judy Lavinder of Lynchburg; a brother-in-law, Burt Powell (Suzanne) of Beech Mountain, NC; a sister-in-law, Miriam Mattox Cundiff Cattlett of Blacksburg; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019 at the First Baptist Church of Gretna by the Rev. Bob Ballance and Steve Clark. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church of Gretna, P.O. Box 339, Gretna, VA 24557.
