Irene Barksdale Power Fry

GRETNA Irene Barksdale Power Fry, 88, of 1357 Hickeys Road, Gretna, died Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born Dec. 31, 1921, at her beloved home, Greenwood, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late William Albin (Fisher) Barksdale and Belle Lillian Imhoff Barksdale.

She was predeceased by a sister, Thelma Lamanca, and three brothers, Louis Bryce Barksdale, William Barksdale and Joseph Thompson Barksdale Sr.

Mrs. Fry was a member and Senior Warden, for more than 20 years, of St. John's Episcopal Church in Mt. Airy. She was a member of the Thomas Carter Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she served as Regent, a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames XVII Century, a member of the Rawley Martin Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, a member of the Pittsylvania County Historical Society and was a retired employee of Coates and Clark Zipper Factory in Newport News.

She is survived by her husband, Charles M. Fry, of the residence; two sons, Chris Power and wife, Nancy, of Gretna, and Michael Power and wife, Lori, of Itasca, Texas; one daughter, Bonnie Carleton, and husband, Pat, of Gretna; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A service of Christian burial will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2010, at St. Johns Episcopal Church by the Rev. Dr. David Smith and The Very Rev. Cleon M. Ross. Burial will follow in Greenfield Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Fry will be carried to her home, Greenwood, on Friday morning, March 26, 2010, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m.

The family will also hold a memorial service to celebrate Irene's life on May 15, 2010, at her home, Greenwood.
