Gretna…..Hugh Paul Irby, age 86 of 4264 Blue Ridge Drive, Gretna, died Saturday, August 6, 2011 at his residence.
Born April 3, 1925 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Robert Hugh Irby and Willie Florence Bailess Irby. Twice married, first to the late Violet Adams Irby, and then to Inez Yeatts Mason Irby of the residence. He was predeceased by one son, Kenny Paul Irby; one daughter, Sandra Irby Rice; three sisters, and one brother. Mr. Irby was a member of Christian Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church, and an Army Veteran. He was a former employee of Klopman, ran the Trailways bus station in Altavista, and ran the Lynchburg Newspaper route for 12 years. Mr. Irby enjoyed flea markets, and working in his blueberry field.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two step-daughters, Robbin Porter and her husband Jeff of Gretna, and Deborah Ferguson and her husband, Ricky of Gretna; five brothers, Dwight Irby of Thomasville, NC, Buck Irby of Gretna, Sam Irby of Hurt, Tim Irby of Hurt, and Enek Irby of Lynchburg; two sisters, Naomi McGhee of Danville, and Vera Hall of Altavista; two grandchildren, Lynn Marsh, and Robbie Rice; six step-grandchildren, Brandy Ferguson and her friend Roger Arnold, Jamie Ferguson, Shannon Cooper and her husband, Andy, Adam Logwood and his friend Heather Hall, Andrew Logwood and his wife, Donna, and Alan Logwood; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Monday, August 8, 2011 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Rev. Dennis Nichols. A Private burial will be held at a later date.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, August 7, 2011 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna, and other times will be at the residence.
